Gaufrage is a mechanical process of embossing fabrics to form a pattern dating in France from the end of the 17th century. Originally a form of rolling mill was created with heated cylinders, one hollow and one in relief, to reproduce the design.

In the 18th century, the mechanism was improved and a single engraved and heated roller was used to apply pressure against a wooden cylinder until the fabric was Gaufraged or crushed with the design.

Lelievre still offer this same process today and our extensive catalogue of designs allows customers to personalize their fabrics with the Gaufrage technique.

Gaufrage is exclusively available on various qualities of our velvet and plain fabrics including satins and ottomans.
